Mission Statement

The Carbon Lighthouse Association (CLA) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to measurably preventing carbon emissions and creating the systemic change necessary to combat the climate crisis. CLA procures carbon allowances from domestic, government-regulated carbon markets. Then we hold the allowances indefinitely so they can never be used by a power plant to emit carbon dioxide. This revolutionary process provides our donors with the highest assurance that their investment is resulting in real, measurable emissions reductions. In addition, the majority of every donation is reinvested by the state governments that host the carbon markets into energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives, giving our donors the rare opportunity to directly invest in green government reform.

About This Cause

The Carbon Lighthouse Association (CLA) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to measurably preventing carbon emissions and creating the systemic change necessary to combat the climate crisis. Over $200 million per year is spent on voluntary carbon offsets, yet much of this money is wasted. The voluntary carbon offset market has faced challenges around ensuring environmental impact. For example, by protecting one forest, a forestry offset might cause the forest next door to be chopped down instead. More fundamentally, even the best offset projects do not address the underlying incentives perpetuating the fossil fuel-based market economy. The Carbon Lighthouse Association (CLA) was founded to provide a solution. Instead of providing traditional carbon offsets, we reduce the amount that entities can pollute by purchasing carbon allowances from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative’s cap and trade auctions and holding them indefinitely. Each allowance we purchase has a traceable serial number, is verified by state governments, and creates a legally-binding requirement for power plants and utilities in the United States to emit one fewer ton of CO2. By aggregating demand for carbon allowances, the Carbon Lighthouse Association enables companies and individuals to bid against utilities, power plants and other regulated entities for the limited supply of available allowances. Once that allowance is purchased by CLA, it cannot be used by a power plant to emit carbon dioxide. This strategy drives direct emissions reductions while also shifting the structural incentives perpetuating the fossil-fuel based market economy. By increasing demand for the carbon allowances, we are driving up the price, making polluting more expensive and inconvenient for fossil fuel corporations. In addition, 80-90% of the funds that the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative receives from the cap and trade auctions is reinvested into energy efficiency, renewable energy, and bill assistance. These reinvestments have already resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars saved on energy and health bills, thousands of tons of additional emissions reductions, and the creation of thousands of green jobs. CLA is proud to allow our donors to contribute to systemic change with multifaceted benefits for the public in the Northeast. With CLA, you have the power to make tangible, powerful climate impact today. We hope you join us on our journey to help create the clean energy future that we want and need.
