Mission Statement
Cat Town is a 501(c)(3) cat rescue organization that utilizes a unique rescue model based on a close collaboration with the municipal shelter and a focus on the hardest-to-place cats. The founding mission is to find homes for animals who are unable to handle the stress of the shelter environment and are thus most likely to be euthanized. Our adoption center allows Cat Town to expand its capacity to get many more cats out of cages and into great homes. Since its founding in 2011, Cat Town has helped over 2,500 cats and helped reduce the euthanasia rate for cats at our municipal shelter by more than 70%.
About This Cause
Formed by long-term volunteers of Oakland’s municipal shelter, Cat Town is a 501(c)(3) cat rescue organization. We are independent of the municipal shelter but operate in partnership with them. Our mission is to find great homes for the cats and kittens who are unable to handle the stress of the shelter environment and are most likely to be euthanized as result. We focus on kittens who are older and more challenging to socialize, cats and kittens who are sick or have special needs, senior cats, and cats who are too shy or stressed to seem adoptable from a shelter cage. These aren’t difficult cats, just cats who are having a normal reaction to what is likely the most stressful experience of their lives. We get these vulnerable cats and kittens into loving foster homes where they can relax. Potential adopters meet our cats in their foster home, where they can show their true personalities. Cat Town opened the first cat cafe in the US, Cat Town Cafe, to significantly increase the number of adoptions of cats who sit too long in a shelter cage.
