Mission Statement
Nigeria has traditionally been an area of the world affected by religious tension, tribal conflict, poverty, and ineffective governmental policies. Many of the basic services and resources we take for granted are working poorly or are completely unavailable: clean water, sanitation facilities, electricity, food availability, health care, and education. Education serves as the foundation for the future. Africa Education Partnership believes that the future success of Nigeria lies in high quality education for all children, regardless of gender, religion, or ethnicity. It is our mission to work with individuals, community groups, and organizations that share this goal and to provide funding for the construction and costs of schools that embrace this vision. We believe that through education comes reconciliation, especially in this volatile part of the world.
About This Cause
Since 2009, Africa Education Partnership has worked in northern Nigeria to provide quality education for all children regardless of gender, ethnic background, or religion. We believe that education is a powerful tool that can facilitate reconciliation. We volunteer our time and treasure to the best of our ability to reach children in poor, rural towns and villages where learning opportunities are often very limited. We first strive to establish friendships with our partners in Nigeria through travel (when possible), frequent communication, and shared vision. The focus for projects comes from our partners based on their stated priorities. Our partnerships are long-term, based on that friendship, trust, and mutual respect. Our focus is to provide safe and healthy environments for learning. For a project to be considered "complete", it will include the following: 1. Renovated or new construction classroom blocks 2. Working borehole or well 3. Provision of toilets 4. Perimeter safety wall 5. Playground equipment 6. Desks and other educational supplies for staff and students When on ground, we meet with teachers and students to share educational materials and ideas, and brainstorm solutions. Our first partnership produced Graceland International School, Gusau, Zamfara State, Nigeria, a K-12 campus of four buildings, all new construction. The school is accredited and is a registered regional testing site for the WAEC exams. The school has science and computer labs, a library, administrative offices, and an exam hall and has a student body of about 500 students. Dormitories and a kitchen/dining hall complex complete this campus. Our second partnership involves seven schools on five different sites in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Nigeria, three of them very rural. Collaboration has resulted in the complete renovation of the three entire rural campuses, complete with boreholes, toilets, and security walls. Two near-by villages were also provided with boreholes under that same project. We are currently working on a complete overhaul of a K-12 campus. We have a prioritized list of needs from our partners that will be addressed when adequate funding is raised. Our vision has expanded to now include the provision of scholarships for students unable to pay the cost of school fees. For $300 per year per child, the gift of education can be shared with an impoverished child. That level of funding also allows us latitude to maintain the facilities and replace equipment as needed. At this time, 45 children have been provided full scholarships. The newest initiative (June 2024) is to empower widows, disenfranchised young adults and men who are currently without viable income by providing the opportunity for targeted skills training. Once accepted into the skills program, participants can choose the skill they want to learn. After meeting exit criteria, participants are provided with starter kits so that they can provide a service or product for sale. The skill centers have storefronts where products can be showcased and sold. Our partners have received funding to build the centers. Now complete, they are beginning to accept trainees. Africa Education Partnership was started in 2009, at the conclusion of the first exploratory trip to Zamfara, Nigeria. Our 501-C-3 designation was recognized in 2012 and the formal letter received in 2014. Our board consists of six active members, and two retired members, Emeritus. All board members are volunteers and receive no compensation from the organization. We are a small but very dedicated group with strong partnerships built on understanding, respect, and friendship. Together, we get things done!
