Mission Statement

Change lives through aquatics. We advocate for and deliver aquatics facilities and programs that embrace the transformative power of aquatics across generations, catalyzing water safety, health and wellness, sports tourism and competitive aquatic sports.

About This Cause

SwimRVA delivers high quality aquatics programming in multiple facilities throughout our region as we aim to make the entirety of Richmond immune to drowning and to use aquatics as a tool for community building. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1-4; second leading cause of accidental death for kids under 14; and the leading cause of death for children with autism. 79% of children from low income households will not learn to swim in the United States, unless we do something to change the story. By building social bridges that cross barriers, SwimRVA fosters health, unity, education and possibility through aquatics. Our key program areas include: • Learn to Swim: We focus on under-resourced schools in the region serving minority and low-income youth. Our Learn-to-Swim program introduces second graders to swimming and water safety. We deliver programming to 2,300 children in 2023 and 29 schools across five school districts. This year we launched our program in Richmond's east end and will serve all five elementary schools in Richmond's seventh district with a learn to swim program. • SwimRVA Lifeguard School: We aim to build on the momentum created from children learning to swim and teach them to become professional rescuers at the middle and high school levels. Our curriculum is taught during the school day as part of Career and Technical Education. We currently serve in Chesterfield, Henrico and City of Richmond. • Senior Wellness: SwimRVA helps our region’s seniors access and benefit from aquatic therapy and activities. We are currently serving more than 600 seniors each week in group exercise and social programming, with the goal of reaching 1,000/week in this fiscal year. • Sports Tourism: As owners of a world class aquatics center that boasts a competition arena and pool that was used in the 2008 US Olympic Trials, a 25 yard instructional pool and a therapy center featuring underwater treadmills and water massage, we aim to boost sports tourism through events at our flagship facility 30-35 weekends/year. We currently realize over $5 million per year of impact.
