NATIONAL BLUES MUSEUM

St. Louis, Missouri, 63101 United States

Mission Statement

The National Blues Museum preserves the Blues' historical significance as an African American art form and the foundation of American music while celebrating its impact and the musicians who continue to advance the art form through live performance.

About This Cause

Visitors to the museum explore the blues from its roots in African oral and instrumental traditions, through its evolution during southern enslavement, to its transplantation from rural to urban environments as emancipated African Americans navigated the United States--escaping the Jim Crow south's systemic violence and seeking out new opportunities. Framed by race's pivotal role in American history, NBM's permanent exhibition examines the blues as a Black art form that influenced the evolution of all forms of American music.
