Mission Statement
Our future is complex, interconnected, multicultural. At Yu Ming, we believe every child, regardless of their background or zip code, should have access to a high-quality education that prepares them today to succeed tomorrow. Yu Ming exists to reverse the opportunity gap and empower all of our students to grow into the empathetic multilingual leaders who will build a more just world. As a leader in Mandarin Immersion education, Yu Ming nurtures our inclusive and diverse community to become empowered, engaged and outstanding global citizens.
About This Cause
Yu Ming Charter School is a non-profit, tuition-free public school located in Oakland, CA and open to all residents of California, regardless of school district boundaries. Diverse by design, we provide a Mandarin immersion education to students in Kindergarten to 8th grade from many racial, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Yu Ming is a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and a 2020 California Distinguished School. Our students outperform their peers in the district, county, and state, regardless of socio-economic background and learning differences. Serving 670 students in 2022, Yu Ming is on track to double in size, expanding opportunities for families in need of high quality public education options, and allowing us to meet the outsize demand for our program. Founded in 2011, Yu Ming is the first Mandarin immersion public charter school in the state.
