Mission Statement

Greater Good Haiti (GGH) is an educational charity that provides education on the island of La Gonâve, Haiti to illiterate children who otherwise would have no access to school. It is administered by Greater Good International, a registered 501(c)(3). The school was launched by a Palo Alto, California school teacher, Kelly Kobza, who traveled to Haiti in the winter of 2010 to assist with post-earthquake relief efforts. While in Haiti, Kelly witnessed Haiti’s crushing poverty and high illiteracy. At the urging of the local leader of the town of Anse-à-Galets, Kelly started the school, called Pi Gwo Byen in Creole. Greater Good Haiti’s main goal is to provide remedial education for children between the ages of 9 and 12 who otherwise have no means of attending school, enabling them to better their lives and the lives of their families. In most cases, students are the first of their families to become literate.

About This Cause

Greater Good Haiti (GGH) is an educational charity that provides education on the island of La Gonâve, Haiti to illiterate children who otherwise would have no access to school. GGH reinforces these efforts with a feeding program, and health, wellness and environmental education to the students and surrounding community. Since 2010, GGH’s pilot program has launched a literacy school, a reforestation project, a community center, and a feeding program for the students. The program has achieved great success, with a pass-rate of 100% in the 6th grade matriculation exam, significantly higher than surrounding public and private schools, and GGH accomplishes this in half the time. The program is designed to be completed in 3 years and the GGH school curriculum aligns with the Haitian National school standards, so children advance to higher levels of literacy and education with financial and community support which encourages continued education.
