Mission Statement
The mission of Bikes for the World is to make affordable, good quality used bicycles available to low-income people in developing countries. These donated bikes provide better transport for work, education, and health care. Bikes for the World also generates additional skilled employment in bike repair and maintenance overseas, and provides satisfying environmental and humanitarian service opportunities for volunteers in the United States. We are the nation’s largest bicycle reuse effort with over 150,000 bikes delivered since 2005. Current overseas partners include programs in micro enterprise, education, health care, and youth development in 13 countries.
About This Cause
Bicycles in many areas of the U.S. have become a disposable item more likely to be replaced than serviced. One result is more unwanted bikes gathering dust in garages and basements. With the right partnerships, these bicycles can transform lives in other communities – providing access to jobs, school, and healthcare, and providing professionals in agriculture and healthcare the ability to reach more beneficiaries and clients. Bikes for the World is a growing network of people helping people through the recycling and re-use of bicycles. Volunteers, donors, and partners in the U.S. and around the globe work together to collect, ship, refurbish and place bicycles with people whose lives can be enhanced through better transportation. Bikes for the World employs a methodology requiring the non-profit receiving partner to “invest” in the cost of shipments, and be responsible for local distribution, which empowers the partner as an effective local development resource. Bikes for the World’s philosophy of accountability to donors and partners, and openness to collaboration with similar programs elsewhere in North America, has been a key factor in the success of this model. Used bikes, while having little value in the U.S., have the ability to empower individuals in developing countries. Overseas, a used bike can be life changing and serve as critical transportation to work or school. A bike can get health workers and agricultural extension agents to their clients, or allow a small business owner to bring goods to customers. Since 2005, Bikes for the World has expanded our focus to twelve countries, developed a core of volunteers, and created an innovative and efficient “business model.” We’ve established our role as the leading intermediary between community groups in the U.S. collecting used bicycles and non-profit community development agencies in developing countries. Together, with our partners on the ground in other countries, unwanted bikes from this country are now converted into a practical and scalable resource for institutional development and individual self-help. Overseas partners include programs in micro enterprise, vocational education, health care delivery, and youth development in 12 countries: Barbados, Burkina Faso, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Morocco, Madagascar, the Philippines, Sierra Leone, and the United States. All bikes originate in the United States, generating local community service and learning opportunities.
