Mission Statement
At CancerFree KIDS we do one thing: we invest in innovative, potentially game-changing childhood cancer research. We give life to new ideas that might otherwise go unfunded and untried. With your help, we fund more research every year giving hope to children with cancer and their families.
About This Cause
To date, CancerFree KIDS has invested more than $5.2M in innovative, high-risk, high-reward childhood cancer research. By providing the 'seed' money for these research projects; which focus on new, innovative ideas, researchers are able to get the preliminary data that is essential to obtaining additional funding from other sources in the future. The National Cancer Institute and other traditional funding sources do not typically fund "early research". This must be funded in order for the researcher to move forward to the second stage of research and hopefully the chance for additional funding. This funding gap must be filled with private donations. CancerFree KIDS is filling the gap for researchers to make sure the lack of funding does not slow down the search for a cure. In this way, researchers have been able to "leverage" grants received from CancerFree KIDS to receive later funding from the National Cancer Institute and/or other funding sources. In addition, research results are shared through a worldwide network called the Children's Oncology Group, thereby substantially increasing the impact of the research. The most significant impact is moving projects forward toward a cure at a faster rate. One example of our success: Dr. Xiaoyang Qi, PhD, was given his first grant of $10,000 when he was at Cincinnati Children’s by CancerFree KIDS and because of our funding his work has led to several patents and millions of dollars in subsequent funding. This promising cancer-killing drug was approved by the FDA on July 13, 2016 to begin the first Human Clinical Trials phase I in Cincinnati, Columbus, Kentucky and New Mexico!! This breakthrough would not be here without CancerFree KIDS' initial funding.
