Mission Statement

Looking for Lilith is an ensemble theatre company that creates original productions and programming by examining history and questioning today from women's perspectives; thereby lifting up underheard voices.

About This Cause

Founded in 2001 in New York City, and relocated to Louisville, KY in 2006, Looking for Lilith produces 6 weeks of mainstage performances each year, including the company's original work and scripted work by feminist playwrights. We conduct year round community outreach: 20 weeks of after school drama classes in 5 JCPS and 2 archdiocese schools; ongoing interactive theatre workshops with various community partners; 5 weeks of summer programming; and year-round touring to middle and high schools, colleges, community centers, and performing arts venues regionally and nationally. LFL is renowned for provocative and uplifting programming that inspires conversations across societal divisions. As such, our programming equally serves children, youth, and adults. The bulk of our work is conducted in Metro Louisville, with mainstage productions hosted at the KY Center for the Arts, school programs primarily in JCPS and Archdiocese schools, and community partnerships with organizations such as Adelante Hispanic Achievers and Backside Learning Center. In addition to our work locally, we consistently tour both in and out of state. Our primary participants range in age from the pre-K students who participate in our summer process dramas, to the thousands of middle, high school and college students who see our touring productions, to the adult audience members who attend our mainstage productions, to the revered seniors for whom we perform in assisted living communities. They hale from all corners of Metro Louisville, and include students, artists, and audience members from Louisville’s West End, participants from Louisville’s vibrant Latinx immigrant community, and audience members who travel to Louisville from surrounding counties and from Southern IN. LFL describes our artistic work as a bird with two wings—productions and community outreach. Both wings must remain strong, both missionally and artistically, to allow us to fly straight! We serve our audience members with high quality, provocative and relevant mainstage productions that build empathy and encourage conversation. We serve the students in our after school programs, residencies, and summer camps through exciting participatory experiences in which they simultaneous grow their skill sets as artists while gaining confidence in their agency and ability to share their own lived experience through the lens of devised theatre. We serve our various communities partners such as the Backside Learning Center and the Latina Women’s group of Eastern Area Community Ministries with our expertise as Applied Theatre practitioners, using the tools of drama to help groups process and address complex topics. Through these two wings, LFL produces a season of programming that both reflects and responds to our community.
