Mission Statement
Artistic Noise builds community with system-impacted youth to enhance their lives through the empowering and therapeutic potential of art making. Through visual arts and entrepreneurship programs, our participants give voice to their experiences, build community through collaborative projects, and learn valuable life and job skills. Artistic Noise creates safe spaces where court-involved youth can be seen, heard, and supported on their path to adulthood. We believe the practice of making art offers opportunities for young people and communities to transform.
About This Cause
Artistic Noise works with youth while they’re incarcerated and when they return home to their community. We provide continuity for these young people and help them build essential leadership skills through our three distinct programs: Studio Art Workshops on Rikers Island, Art Therapy and the Art, Entrepreneurship and Curatorial Program (A&E). While there has been progress over the past 20 years, we have sadly been reminded once again why our work continues to be so important. Many of the challenges our youth experienced in 2001 persists to this day. Through this national moment of reckoning, racial disparities and inequalities have been laid bare before our eyes. Along with our youth participants, board of directors, and dedicated staff, we have thought long and hard about the challenges we must face to Meet the Moment---from transitioning our programs to a virtual space, to finding new ways to maintain community in our now-distant world. As we reflect on our past and look towards the future, we know that it’s not always easy, but we continue to step up and serve our community by meeting the needs of our youth.
