Mission Statement

The mission of Colin’s Hope is to provide education, tools and resources to parents/caregivers and children to prevent children from drowning. Our vision is of a world where no child drowns.

About This Cause

Each year, Texas alone loses approximately 100 children of all ages to fatal, preventable drownings in all kinds of water. That is the equivalent of 2 school buses or 4 classrooms of children! It is estimated that 5-7x as many survive a preventable non-fatal drowning. Some survive with no injury, while others and their families are left with lifelong injury, emotional trauma. Medical costs and financial hardship. Colin’s Hope believes that early education can create safer behaviors around water and end drowning. Drowning has no boundaries. We lose children of every race, gender and ethnicity. We lose children from high income families, children from lower socioeconomic families and everything in between. We must reach children and families everywhere to address this drowning epidemic. Colin's Hope has become the trusted water safety resource , a leader in drowning prevention across the nation and globally and reaches children and families each year with a variety of water safety and drowning prevention programs. Additionally, Colin’s Hope serves on and provides leadership to local, state and National water safety and drowning prevention groups. Our major programs are listed below: 1) Colin's Hope Water Safety Education Card Program: Each year, we produce, assemble and distribute 75,000 English and Spanish water safety education cards to parents and caregivers throughout Central Texas and beyond. We partner with countless schools, child care centers, Texas DFPS home visits, swim schools and community pools, community groups and businesses to get these out far and wide. 2) Water Safety with Colin and Friends Curriculum: This evidence based water safety curriculum and water safety lessons is bilingual, is designed for children ages 3-7 and is now available for FREE in English and Spanish online at www.drowningispreventable.org The curriculum aligns with many of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and has been proven to increase children's water safety knowledge. The curriculum is effective, flexible, can stand alone in a dryland setting or be paired with swim lessons. It also includes a parent educational component as we know that we must educate, create and sometimes change the behaviors of both children and caregivers to create a safer water safety culture. Each year, we reach more than 2,500 children and families in person. Our strategic goal is to greatly increase the number of children and families who receive this program by promoting the online lessons at www.drowningispreventable.org 3) Colin & Friends is a diverse, bilingual board book that teaches young children and their parents/caregivers life-saving water safety skills and behaviors. These books are distributed to families through our community partners and given to libraries, schools, mobile clinics and other appropriate venues. 4) PreK and Kindergarten Swim Safety Program: We provide the Colin & Friends water safety curriculum lessons and sponsor swim lessons to preschool aged children in Austin, Buda, Wimberley, Round Rock and through a partnership with Austin ISD, the YMCA of Austin and the Central Texas YMCA. This program provides water safety lessons, swim lessons and parent education to young children who are most at-risk of drowning. This program is cost effective and flexible enough to fit any community. 5) Community and Online Water Safety Education: We provide community education year round using a comprehensive Water Safety Awareness Campaign that includes print ads, billboards, TV and Radio PSA’ , Social Media, hundreds of community events. Additionally we educate people daily with our Colin’s Hope wrapped vehicle that serves as a moving billboard for water safety. Each year, we leverage in in-kind support through our community partners! Our website and online water safety quiz serve as free resources to anyone able to access the internet. www.colinshope.org 6) Colin's Hope life Jacket Loaner Program: We provide life jackets year round to keep local life jacket loaner stations stocked at area swimming locations, including; Mansfield Dam Park, Windy Point Park and Lakeway City Park on Lake Travis, Hamilton Pool Preserve, Lake Georgetown and soon to the McKinney Falls State Park. We hope to help open new stations at other Texas swimming and recreation areas where drownings could be prevented by making loaner life jackets available.. If Colin’s Hope can educate both children and parents/caregivers how to develop safer behaviors around water at every age, then we can prevent drownings from occurring. We know that drownings are preventable and education and safer behaviors will save lives.
