Mission Statement
Our Mission is to serve and develop a diverse community of technically skilled rowers of all ages and capabilities in a coached setting that is safe, fun, and nurtures the teamwork, motivation, perseverance, responsibility and stewardship of resources needed to be successful on the water and in life. OPRA provides our community an inclusive organization with excellent facilities, coaching and equipment that provides sustainable, adaptive, recreational and competitive rowing in a northwest marine environment.
About This Cause
OPRA was founded in 2007 by John Halberg. John's vision was to support youth on the Olympic Peninsula by presenting rowing and the skills associated with rowing to youth, allowing them to build lifelong values and skills. The Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association (OPRA) offers an exciting opportunity for the youth and adults in our community. Our indoor training center is in the Landing Mall and our boathouse is on scenic Ediz Hook. This rowing program is growing quickly under the leadership of Head Coach Debby Swinford, who has worked as an educator and rowing coach for more than twenty-five years in the classroom and on the water. We anticipate continued strong growth as this program continues to build on its success. Affordable fees, along with community donations for equipment and program scholarships, combine with volunteer support to make this rowing program accessible to all youth. Rapidly growing participation, supported by community donations, continues to move this program toward the goals of sustainability and accessibility to a wide variety of rowers. We have also grown our adult “Masters” rowing program within our community. We invite new rowers to try our program and visit our team practices. Youth rowers start as early as middle school or during high school. Many rowers start out in our recreational team where they have the opportunity to learn the sport of rowing and build positive relationships with other members of their team. Our competitive rowers include junior varsity and varsity rowers who travel and compete. In 2018 our rowers competed on local, regional and national levels. As our youth move on to college, many have opportunities to row at a collegiate level and improved accessibility to college programs.
