Mission Statement
Animal rescue and animal welfare organization. We work with dogs of all ages that need help with behavioral and medical issues as well as dogs and puppies that have just gotten a bad start.
About This Cause
Short & Stumpy Pups Inc dba Our Best Friends rescue is an organization that started out wanting to help shelter dogs find permanent homes. We discovered quickly that there are many more dogs and puppies in need for a number of reasons. We started taking in dogs with behavioral issues that would be euthanized in shelters for very mild behavior problems. Then we found that animals were being left in high kill shelters because they had an illness that their family couldn't afford to deal with or didn't want to. Then the seniors that were being left because their human couldn't afford what the veterinarians wanted to charge to humanely euthanize them with their family member present. After many years of companionship these people couldn't afford to care for their loved one let alone spend hundreds of dollars to send them to the Rainbow Bridge. People on fixed incomes have a hard enough time providing the basics their cherished pet needs without having to bear the insane fees many places charge to care for animals. While publicly funded shelters do offer the service of euthanasia, they don't allow the person giving the animal up to be with them when they pass. We offer to take these pups in at no cost to the family and let them stay with us and get them medical care they need and give them a comfortable life in a home for as long as they have a good quality of life. When their time arrives to cross over we then stay with them to complete their journey. Some need to go to the doctors office, for others we have the doctors come to us and then some leave this world on their own. The most important thing is that all of them know they are loved and aren't alone. Other dogs have come to us because other rescues feel they aren't worth the cost of treatment that they will incur. We believe that they all deserve a chance. If we can get them here to us we will. And we will do what's right for them. Some have a long journey to us, thousands of miles and many days but we try very hard to get them here. We have volunteers that help transport as well as paid transporters that we use. We have brought dogs from 4 weeks to 20 years of age into the rescue from all over the U.S. so that they may have a chance to live and love. The only way this is possible is with the support of people who care. We are all volunteer. None of us receive compensation for this passion that we have. More often than not the funds come out of our own pockets if it means saving a life. All donations go to help more dogs in need. We home foster only. No dogs are put in boarding or in kennels somewhere. All our dogs live in homes that are appropriate for that animals wants and needs. We take in handicaps of all kinds as well. Blind, deaf, paralyzed, amputees etc.. There is no dog that doesn't deserve a chance at happiness. What others see as a handicap these pups see as the life they have. They don't have pity parties for themselves, they just go forward and live. So we ask for any help that we can get. We fund raise to cover the expenses but more to cover the vet bills we've already incurred. We are blessed with doctors that get what we do and let us owe them tens of thousands between fund raising efforts. Thank you for listening - keep the pups in your thoughts.
