Mission Statement
A network of neighbors, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.
About This Cause
For more than 150 years, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has quietly cared for those in need throughout Cincinnati and Hamilton County. More than 1,000 volunteers care for people in their own neighborhoods, visiting the homes of people in need nearly 7,000 times each year. In addition to providing immediate help with pressing needs such as food or utilities, we operate southwest Ohio's only Charitable Pharmacy; seven thrift stores that provide furniture, clothing and household items to people in need; a comprehensive social service office; a food pantry network including the Becky & Ted Choice Food Pantry in the West End; and the Ozanam Center for Service Learning. To learn more about our programming, a detailed list is below: Choice Food Pantry: SVDP provides a wide selection of food for individuals and families suffering from food insecurity. Over 30,000 neighbors across many Cincinnati zip codes receive food each year from this program. Charitable Pharmacy: SVDP operates the only pharmacy in Southwest Ohio providing free pharmaceutical care to over 1,000 uninsured and under-insured people. The Pharmacy distributes over 65,000 free prescriptions each year which not only leads to strong patient outcomes, such as better controlled diabetes and reduced tobacco usage, but also saves the local health system over $2.5MM. Homelessness Prevention Program: SVDP offers rent and utility assistance to families on the verge of homelessness. Over $1.5MM is distributed each year to keep upwards of 7500 families safely in their homes. Re-Entry Program: SVDP helps returning citizens (recently incarcerated individuals) and their families to meet basic needs and to re-establish self-sufficiency. This program serves over 500 individuals each year and also engages communities across Cincinnati to become volunteers, mentors, and/or advocates. Bed Program: SVDP provides mattresses with frames and box springs for individuals and families who do not have their own safe place to sleep. This program distributes over 1,200 beds each year to neighbors who otherwise would not be able to purchase a bed for their family. Thrift Stores and Vouchers: SVDP’s seven thrift stores throughout greater Cincinnati provide upwards of $800,000 worth of clothing and furniture to neighbors in need at no cost through a voucher program. Additionally, these enterprises contribute over $1.2MM to SVDP to help fund services and programs. Ozanam Center for Service Learning: SVDP facilitates service learning programming to educate and challenge community members to connect the lived realities of neighbors to issues of social justice and to grow a commitment to long-term solutions. The Ozanam Center hosts more than 50 retreat groups and engages over 1,000 participants each year. Vincentian Volunteers of Cincinnati (VVC): SVDP coordinates this year-long, residential service program which helps young professionals grow in faith, friendship, and service by working with those in need. Currently, five Vincentian Volunteers work full-time at SVDP and provide over 800 hours of volunteer service each month. Additional Services: SVDP provides a wide range of additional services including vision and dental screenings, Ohio state IDs, birth certificates, beds, personal care products, baby diapers, seasonal needs (coats, toys, holiday meals, fans/air conditioners), and nutrition classes.
