Mission Statement

For 66 years, Heinzerling Community has been providing critical services for our community's most developmentally disabled children and adults. Today 475, dedicated staff members work together to provide important residential and developmental supports to more than 200 Heinzerling residents. This includes important therapies, nursing care, dietary support, and programming. The mission of the Heinzerling Community is to provide a loving and nurturing home that enriches the development, education and quality of life of people with profound developmental disabilities.

About This Cause

Heinzerling Community provides a home to 200 children and young adults ranging in age from 1months to 77. The residents live in a personalized home-like environment in which they receive many services from a variety of professionals to help them gain developmental skills, increase their independence, and improve their quality of life. This includes therapy, education, life skills, dietary support, and 24-hour nursing care. The mission of the Heinzerling Community is to provide a loving and nurturing home that enriches the development, education and quality of life of people with profound developmental disabilities. Description of Current Programs and Activities: Heinzerling has a highly skilled staff of 475, including specialists such as dieticians, direct care professionals, licensed physical, occupational, and respiratory therapists, physicians and dentists, program directors, and qualified developmental and consulting psychologists. These highly skilled individuals work with each resident to achieve many of their person-centered “Individual Plans,” a set of goals that include daily living skills, mobility, communication skills, and behavioral goals. The staff goes beyond highly trained caregivers. To the residents, they are trusted friends, family, and supporters who encourage them daily. The extra love and personal involvement they bring to their work are largely responsible for the progress displayed by many of our residents. A brief description of the daily services and programs provided include: Programming: residents receive daily living activities and participate in community outings that give them opportunities to work on current skills and develop new growth toward independence. Daily living tasks include feeding and dressing oneself, walking using assistive walkers, and moving arms and hands to complete small tasks. Community outings include participating in annual community field trips, such as going to the zoo, local pools, museums, the Franklin Park Conservatory, the Ohio State Fair, and Ballet Met performances, to name a few. The programming staff also works with each resident to develop goals for communication and socialization through the use of communication devices. Dietary Services - Registered dieticians assess each resident's nutritional needs and develop individualized nutrition plans. They prepare food in various textures and liquid forms that adhere to the residents' developmental and oral motor abilities. They also conduct tube feedings and prepare lunches for off-site activities. Therapy - residents receive physical and occupational therapy services from licensed therapists. Each resident is given assessments and interventions for musculoskeletal and sensorimotor skill development. The results of these exercises assist therapists in developing a therapy plan for each resident. Additional support and treatments are given for swallowing disorders. Also, the maintenance staff builds specialized wheelchairs, baby cribs, and orthopedic equipment for residents. In addition, residents receive weekly speech and language therapy from our certified Speech Language Pathologist. Nursing - Residents receive 24-hour care and emergency medical services from RNs and LPNs. This includes medication administration, respiratory services, skin and wound treatments, and ostomy care. In addition, an on-site physician and dentist provide annual checkups and any necessary treatments. Ventilator Respiratory Program - This program provides care for medically fragile residents with chronic respiratory conditions. Heinzerling Community has a Respiratory Therapy Manager and five full-time respiratory therapists who manage and monitor all ventilator equipment in conjunction with the nursing staff. Currently, we have 22 residents on a ventilator full-time, representing an 83% increase since the program's inception. Currently, we have the capacity to serve a total of 26 residents in need of these services. This program has been identified as an area of growth for the Heinzerling Community. Our long-term goal is to serve 40 children and adults with ventilator support needs.
