Mission Statement

In order to increase philanthropic support and to expand the impact of EdTA, The Educational Theatre Foundation was established. Theatre teaches essential skills such as collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking, enabling success in college, career, and life. Yet only 28% of schools in the poorest neighborhoods offer theatre education. ETF works to close that gap via direct grants to students, teachers, and schools. The Educational Theatre Foundation is committed to this work through four programs: JumpStart Theatre, Pathway, Thespian Excellence & Growth Grants, and Scholarships. In order to increase philanthropic support and to expand the impact of EdTA, The Educational Theatre Foundation was established. EdTA operates a professional association for theatre teachers alongside the Educational Theatre Foundation and International Thespian Society. The International Thespian Society, an honor society active in nearly 5,000 schools, has inducted 2.4 million students since 1929. The foundation provides essential financial support to enhance theatre education, expand access, and foster racial equity. EdTA serves roughly 6,000 professional members, primarily theatre arts teachers in middle schools and high schools, and approximately 80,000 Thespians (high school students inducted into the honorary society) annually. EdTA’s program of service to professional and student members covers all 50 states, with active state chapters in 44 states. Thespian chapters are also chartered in China and Canada (Ontario, British Columbia).

About This Cause

The Educational Theatre Foundation (ETF) is the fundraising arm of The Educational Theatre Association (EdTA). ETF's mission is to provide all students equitable access to quality theatre education. The Foundation achieves this mission by providing financial support to programs that expand access to and participation in school theatre for underserved and marginalized communities and fund theatre programs' growth and sustainability. The Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) is a national nonprofit theatre education organization with approximately 80,000 student and professional members and is home to the International Thespian Society (ITS), an honorary society for middle-level and high school theatre students. EdTA has evolved over 90 years into a professional association and resource for theatre arts educators and students, as well as an advocate for making theatre a part of education at all levels.
