About This Cause

Union Institute & University, founded in 1964, is a private, non-profit, regionally accredited global university spanning from Ohio to Florida and California with online offerings that reach students internationally. Designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution by the Department of Education, Union is dedicated to its mission to educate highly motivated adults who seek academic programs to engage, enlighten, and empower them to pursue professional goals and a lifetime of learning, service, and social responsibility. Anchored by its values of Academic Excellence, Creative and Critical Thinking, Theory and Practice, Social Justice, Diversity, and Integrity, Union actively challenges minds and transforms the lives of adults who view learning as a lifetime adventure and commitment to be shared with the world around them. Approximately 1,000 students (average age 39 and 32% minority) pursue undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees as well as certificates in a vibrant online and hybrid environment combining the best of guided independent studies and practical application with expert faculty guidance and support services. Among its 20,300 alumni are 27 college presidents, thousands of teachers, administrators, and professors, authors, artists, corporate, nonprofit, and healthcare leaders, psychologists and counselors, multicultural scholars and clergy, law enforcement officers, and elected officials. Connecting education to values, Union's faculty and staff are dedicated to help individuals recognize their leadership qualities and motivate them to use those capacities for both community and self-improvement. A continuing commitment to innovative and creative approaches to adult learning serves UI&U graduates well as they use their education to make a difference in their lives, their communities, their workplaces, and the world. Union is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), and licensed by the Ohio Department of Higher Education, the California Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education, and the Florida Commission for Independent Education. The majority of Union students are adults (average age of 39) and have full time employment. At the undergraduate level, many are seeking degrees and certificates to enhance their credentials for improved employment opportunities and also to serve as role models for their families. At the graduate (masters and doctoral level) students typically have careers and are not only seeking career advancement, but also following their passions to be better equipped to make an impact within their chosen field. Courses at UI&U are either fully online courses, or hybrid courses that involve a combination of online and face-to-face aspects, including residencies. Union enrolls students nationally and internationally, many served from the academic centers in Cincinnati, Ohio, Los Angeles and Sacramento, California, and Hollywood, Florida. Technical support, academic tutoring and support, and library services for courses are available 24/7. In most programs, courses are asynchronous and students are not required to interact together at set times during the week. Some programs have synchronous elements within the online format. Graduate programs have required face-to-face components that may be virtual or a physical residency. Undergraduate programs are mostly online and may have required or optional virtual meetings. Many of the university’s students are first in their families to earn a degree. The profile of the Union student is predominantly female, average age of 39, and Pell Grant eligible. More than 75 percent of the students receive financial aid in the form of grants and loans. Providing scholarships for these students is paramount to their success. A beacon for social justice, Union is committed to an innovative teaching and learning culture that promotes the common good, as together, we serve a culturally pluralistic, equitable, and interdependent world.
