Mission Statement
Our mission is to help alleviate hunger in our community by serving the poor in an environment of respect, care, and hospitality. We call the people we serve our “guests,” because we want them to feel welcomed and to maintain their dignity during what is a trying time in their lives. It is our exclusive focus to serve the poor and our activities are designed to do that in two ways: by preparing and serving meals and by putting together bags of groceries and toiletries and distributing them.
About This Cause
Our mission is to help alleviate hunger in our community by serving the poor in an environment of respect, care, and hospitality. We call the people we serve our “guests,” because we want them to feel welcomed and to maintain their dignity during what is a trying time in their lives. It is our exclusive focus to serve the poor and our activities are designed to do that in two ways: by preparing and serving meals and by putting together bags of groceries and toiletries and distributing them. The poor in Over-The-Rhine can come to our Kitchen to receive a hot meal five days per week; in the Walnut Hills area, the poor can rely on our Kitchen to be there with a hot meal six times per week. Individuals and families can stretch their incomes by receiving groceries and toiletries at the Walnut Hills Pantry on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Our guests are part of a substantial segment of our community: Those living below the poverty line. Our guests are from the communities of Over-The-Rhine and Walnut Hills and the surrounding areas. No matter how responsible someone may be in living their lives, hard times, bad luck, a crippling illness, or the loss of a job can happen. Having to rely on a “soup kitchen” for food is not something anyone aspires to. The people we serve are truly down on their luck. The population we serve consists of people who are disadvantaged by their physical or mental health or other circumstances, and they lack the financial means, the psychological capacity, the housing, or even life skills to provide themselves with a meal and/or groceries. Among our guests, we see the mentally ill, the elderly poor, the working poor, and those who are homeless. Through our services and with our help, they can meet their basic human need for food and water, thereby improving the quality of their life.
