Mission Statement
Shelterhouse is a community of residents, staff, and volunteers working together to provide basic human services for men and women experiencing homelessness with a primary commitment to shelter.
About This Cause
Shelterhouse is the largest and most comprehensive homeless shelter provider in the Tri State region; serving over 3,300 homeless people each year in a variety of programs, with the goal of moving the homeless into stable and permanent housing. Each year Shelterhouse moves more homeless people into housing than any other organization in the region. Our Emergency Shelter Program treats the vast majority of all single homeless adults in the Greater Cincinnati region with a total of 210 beds. The David and Rebecca Barron Center for Men has 150 beds and the Esther Marie Hatton Center for Women has 60 beds. Our emergency shelters offer basic survival needs such as three daily meals, a bed to sleep in, toiletries, and emergency clothing items. We are consistently operating at an over-capacity level and although our official bed capacity is 210; our average daily count in 2019 was 243 people; well over our official bed capacity. We also provide intensive Case Management Programs to all residents by qualified case managers/social workers who work with each client to break down the barriers which prevent them from obtaining housing. Our Rapid Re-Housing Program is designed to help homeless people transition rapidly out of a shelter system into housing ideally within 30 days. The primary goal is to stabilize a person in permanent housing as quickly as possible. We also operate an Out-Patient Recovery Program for individuals suffering from various substance abuse issues. Our Deaconess Health Check Clinics operate in both the men’s and women’s shelters and offer medical services to all homeless people in the region at no charge. Finally, we also house the city’s Winter Shelter at the Barron Center for Men, which operates December – February and typically treats another 800-900 homeless people during these 90 days.
