Mission Statement
Families from throughout Ohio, across the United States, and from around the world come to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center seeking life-saving treatment for their critically ill children. Often times, they come to Cincinnati exhausted, scared and financially drained as they struggle to pay overwhelming medical bills. Our House cares for 78 guest families every night, providing them with a “home away from home” while their children receive medical treatment. In addition to providing a comfortable bedroom, we surround our families with love and support from our volunteers, staff and other guest families who share the same hopes and fears. We also provide home-cooked meals, activities, indoor and outdoor play areas, laundry facilities, computers and WiFi, and much more so that our guest families can concentrate on what is most important – their critically ill children.
About This Cause
Ronald McDonald House of Greater Cincinnati’s mission is to provide a supportive "home away from home" for families and their children who are receiving treatment at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center or other area hospitals, regardless of their ability to contribute financially toward their stay. We offer all the comforts of home to help lift the financial, physical and emotional burdens so parents, in turn, can better care for their critically ill children. A catastrophic illness can cripple a family’s finances. For example, guest families living at our House often face such financial strain that even a $25 per day voluntary contribution towards their stay is a hardship. The percentage of families who could not afford this modest amount was 70% in 2013, yet no one is turned away due to inability to contribute. (Our actual cost to operate a room is $99 per day with guests contributing an average slightly less than $5 per day.) Our House serves all ages, socioeconomic levels and races, welcoming families who need a supportive environment in which to rest and support their seriously ill children. Each year, our House cares for over 1,500 families and their ill children by providing: a comfortable place to sleep and daily home-cooked meals; laundry facilities, exercise and wellness rooms as well as shared living areas; indoor and outdoor play areas for the ill children and their siblings; on-site teachers and regularly programmed family activities; and, ongoing support from other families, volunteers and staff. With our common kitchen, dining and living room areas, Ronald McDonald House also gives families the opportunity to feel support and give support to families in similar crisis situations. This social network helps families “de-stress” and thus be better equipped to support their sick children.
