Mission Statement
The mission of the Family Abuse Shelter of Miami Co., Inc. is to provide safe shelter to homeless and abused persons in times of crisis and to offer life-changing services promoting stability, dignity and self-reliance.
About This Cause
The Family Abuse Shelter was founded by Barbel Adkins who was working as a Miami County Deputy Sheriff at the time. Barbel identified the need to develop a better solution for sheltering victims of domestic violence, as they were often housed temporarily in the county jail for their protection. In 1979, with financial assistance from local churches, schools, and civic organizations, a permanent shelter was established as a safe haven for domestic violence and homelessness victims at the Franklin House in downtown Troy, Ohio (16 Franklin St). In 1989, services were expanded when Barbel implemented the first batterer’s intervention program in Miami County, called “Alternatives”. The program was developed to hold domestic violence offenders accountable and to provide them with tools towards dealing with stress, anger and control issues alternatively. In 1991, the Buckeye House, an emergency shelter for homeless men, was opened. Today, both shelters continue to serve the community and operate on a 24/7 basis.
