Mission Statement

The mission of Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana is to provide a coordinated approach to alleviating hunger in East Central Indiana.

About This Cause

Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana was incorporated in 1983 to provide a coordinated approach to alleviating hunger in East Central Indiana. Second Harvest Food Bank is the region’s largest hunger-relief organization serving over 100 pantries and meal programs in Blackford, Delaware, Grant, Henry, Jay, Madison, Randolph and Wabash Counties. Second Harvest secures and distributes millions of pounds of donated food and grocery products annually in partnership with food industry donors and Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network. Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana supports feeding agencies, including food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, and Kids Cafes®. These local organizations seek to provide emergency food assistance to 75,890 hungry Hoosiers, including more than 25,000 children and over 15,000 seniors each year. Second Harvest’s core program is food solicitation and distribution. Second Harvest distributes food and grocery items to other charities serving low-income residents, provides food programs for children and operates the Tailgate Program, a mobile pantry distributing fresh produce and other food directly to people meeting the truck. We have a small purchase program to enhance inventory and contract with the State of Indiana to distribute government commodities through The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP).
