Mission Statement

The Wilds Mission is to advance conservation through science, education and personal experience.

About This Cause

The Wilds was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1984 by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio Department of Development, Ohio zoological parks, and the private sector with the belief that environmental solutions require a serious scientific approach. Two years later, Central Ohio Coal Company donated nearly 10,000 acres of reclaimed mining fields in southeast Ohio to serve as a hub for scientists to explore the preservation of wildlife and their native habitats through education, research and conservation. The next ten years were spent carefully developing the site, securing financial support from foundations and private donors, building a staff, and introducing a wide variety of species – both native and non-native – into the open pastures. The Wilds opened to the public in 1994 as a private, non-profit park combining innovative conservation science and education programs with hands-on experiences and one-of-a-kind safari adventures. There are a number of qualities that distinguish the Wilds as unique not only locally, but globally as well. The expansive 9,154 acres consist of open grasslands, wetlands, forests and 150 freshwater lakes. And in addition to having lots of space, the area’s rich biodiversity is a great benefit to scientists and researchers – allowing them to explore a range of scientific disciplines, provide more robust education for students, and focus on critical conservation initiatives (including Restoration Ecology; Conservation Medicine; Animal Management, Husbandry and Health; and Field Conservation). Currently, the Wilds is home to 31 rare and endangered species representing more than 350 mammals from around the world. Since 2002, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium oversees all operations for the Wilds, and the Zoo’s President and CEO, Tom Stalf, oversees both organizations. Their mission has a singular focus on conservation: to advance conservation through science, education and personal experience. With this purpose, the Wilds manages a number of programs and services that strive to build a more conservation-conscious society that recognizes the importance of biodiversity and actively engages in the protection of wildlife and natural resources.
