Mission Statement
The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra educates, enlightens and entertains residents of Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati with thematic, family-friendly concerts year round in locations throughout the community. The aim of the KSO is to build a new audience for symphonic music by offering a variety of great (often nostalgic) music that is attractive, accessible, and affordable.
About This Cause
The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra (KSO) was founded in 1992 to make symphony concerts friendly and fun for Tri-state residents. Based in Newport, KY the organization’s mission remains to make symphonic music attractive, accessible and affordable for a new and diverse audience. Thematic programs comprise all three of the KSO’s major offerings —Subscription Series, free Education Outreach Series, and free Summer Series in Devou and Tower Parks. The Subscription Series nearly 5,000 people attend affordable program, which blending both familiar and unique symphonic fare, often employing collaborative aspects such as, opera, theatre, dance, film, video, period costumes, distinctive lighting and a range of guest artists from Metropolitan Opera singers, to Broadway performers, to popular rock bands, and local greats. The Education Outreach Series is a comprehensive education program where Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati students grades 3-12 attend various concerts at no cost to them or their school. These concerts are designed to introduce and showcase classical music, assist educators in teaching core concepts in the areas of arts and humanities and offer ways to tie music into cross-curriculum lessons plans. The education series has more than 150,000 students in over 260 schools since 1995. The Summer Series provides six free outdoor concerts each summer. The Summer Series averages 12,000-15,000 guests each year. The emphasis of the Summer concert series is on providing quality musical performances in a casual setting of Devou (Covington) and Tower Parks (Ft. Thomas) to entertain families and individuals of all socio-economic backgrounds. Subsidiary groups like the Newport Ragtime Band, the KSO Studio Orchestra, Covington Devou Doo-Daddies and the Floodwall Jazz Quintet allow the KSO performance flexibility and the opportunity to authentically explore America’s musical heritage. The KSO performs an important role in the region by attracting new audiences that normally would not attend a classical music performance, due to real or perceived social, cultural, and economic barriers.
