Mission Statement

Caracole’s mission is to positively change lives in the fight against HIV/AIDS through prevention, housing and care.

About This Cause

Founded in 1987, Caracole Inc. was the first housing agency in the tristate for people living with HIV/AIDS. When Caracole first opened, the client population consisted of relatively young gay and bisexual men diagnosed with AIDS. At that time, the average lifespan was two years from diagnosis to death. In 1998 with the advent of many new drug regimens, those living with HIV/AIDS began living longer, healthier lives, dramatically changing their needs and therefore the services we provide. Since that time, our staff has seen substantial increases in the number of women, homeless people and families in need of extensive assessment, treatment and referral services for mental health, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS care and housing. In response to those factors, Caracole now provides HIV prevention services for the community and case management, pharmacy and housing for HIV+ individuals along a continuum of care. The agency is based in the Northside neighborhood of Cincinnati, and thanks to partnerships with The Cincinnati Health Network and Hamilton County Health Department, boasts an on-site clinic, The Peter T. Frame Primary Care Center, which provides a medical home for Caracole clients’ non-infectious disease related needs; evening hours syringe exchange services as a part of our harm reduction efforts to minimize the risk of HIV transmission from intravenous drug use as well as a harm reduction vending machine that is able to accept used syringes and dispense free harm reduction tools like Naloxone and Fentanyl test strips to those in need.
