Mission Statement

Interfaith Hospitality Network of Springfield (IHN) serves the homeless in the Springfield/Clark County Community through operating two emergency shelters, Norm's Place for families and single women and Hartley House for single men. While a guest in one of the shelters, guests are offered intensive goal-setting case management to assist in overcoming the barriers that caused their homelessness, a safe secure shelter, three meals daily, shower and laundry facilities, and all hygiene needs.

About This Cause

IHN serves by operating the only emergency shelters in Springfield/Clark County for homeless families, single women and single men, Norm’s Place family and single woman shelter and Hartley House for single men. These shelters are open 24/7, 365 days a year. The shelters provide bathing facilities, laundry facilities, storage lockers, meals, hygiene products as needed, and a telephone for use when making appointments. Norm’s Place provides a bedroom for each family, giving stability to the children during this stressful time in their lives, while single women share a room. Hartley House has shared bedrooms for the single men. Both shelters are equipped with handicapped facilities. Ongoing Program services provided by IHN starts with intensive goal-setting case management, an important component of IHN’s mission to provide guests with the tools required to be self-sufficient members of the community. Guests together with the Case Manager identify the barriers that caused their homelessness and establishing an Individual Service Plan (ISP) outlining the steps and referrals to other agencies needed to overcome their barriers. The ISP may include referrals to classes such as job training, GED, parenting, or in-house life skills workshops. As well referrals are made to Mental Health or McKinley Hall for substance abuse treatment. IHN offers in house Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counseling twice weekly for those currently in treatment and those who have completed treatment, to reinforce their sobriety. During periods of extreme weather, IHN opens an overflow shelter providing services to those who live on the street, in vehicles, or other unsafe locations. IHN provides all basic hygiene items as needed, made possible through the generous donations of the community. To enable guests to make and keep appointments, search for employment or housing, they are provided once a week bus passes or gasoline cards for those with vehicles. IHN tracks the success of all guests who exit the program for six months after leaving. Former guests can return once a month for six months for non-perishable food items provided by IHN’s food pantry.
