Mission Statement
The Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band is an organization in which adult and advanced student musicians can perform outstanding concert band music to enhance the musical and cultural life of the communities of southwestern Ohio, free of charge.
About This Cause
Membership in the Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band is voluntary. The only band members who are required to complete a very informal audition process are the advanced student musicians (High School level). The informal audition is primarily to determine where within the section the student musician should be placed. Band members are not paid to play in the Band. In fact, band members pay a membership fee of $40.00 per year in order to participate. The membership fee covers incidental expenses incurred by the band. The Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band currently performs four (4) concerts per year: the Christmas/Holiday Concert in December; a late Winter Concert in March; a Spring Concert in May; and a Summer "Concert in the Park" in June. Three of the concerts are performed in the Dave Finkelman Auditorium on the regional campus of Miami University in Middletown, Ohio. The fourth concert (June) is performed in the amphitheater at Keehner Park in West Chester, Ohio. We do not charge admission for our concerts, and no tickets are required. Each concert, with the exception of the summer concert, is followed by an informal reception for the concert-goers and band members in the lobby of Finkelman Auditorium. We gladly accept donations to help defray the expense of the reception, but donations are not required in order to enjoy the snacks and beverages that are provided. All concerts are kiddo-friendly, with a special surprise appearance by Santa Claus at the December Concert. We believe that the Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band is one of the finest all-volunteer community bands in the country. It is our goal to provide the finest performances of outstanding concert band music to our audiences at each of our concerts, without charging admission. The Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band has been in existence for 50 years (1969 to Present), and we hope to be in existence for at least 50 more. We rely upon charitable contributions, individual and corporate, for our funding, as well as participating in the Kroger Community Rewards Program; the Amazon Smile Donation Program; and, hopefully, the Kohl's "Associates in Action" Volunteer Program.
