Mission Statement

The mission of Target Hunger is to alleviate hunger and its root causes in the Houston neighborhoods we serve. Our vision is a Houston where no one goes hungry and everyone can provide food for themselves and their families.

About This Cause

For over 33 years, Target Hunger has carried out its mission to alleviate hunger and its root causes in Houston. Our vision is a city where no one goes hungry, and everyone can provide food for themselves and their families. Target Hunger was originally formed to serve Fifth Ward. Our service area quickly grew to include northeast Houston neighborhoods including Denver Harbor, Kashmere Gardens, North Forest, Settegast, and others. Our most recent expansion, in 2020, took us east of downtown into areas of high need in Second Ward and along the Ship Channel, including Magnolia Park, Harrisburg, and Manchester. Before Target Hunger became a standalone agency in 1989, it was a program of the United Way of Greater Houston. In December 2021, we were selected to be the one of their primary Regional Navigation Sites, their Second Century Vision initiative designed to support leading nonprofit social services agencies delivering quality services with exceptional outcomes. We are currently one of the Houston Food Bank’s largest distributors and a leading collaborator among organizations devoted to breaking cycles of generational poverty that perpetuate long-term food insecurity for families and turn neighborhoods into food deserts. We are proud to work with both of these outstanding organizations, and with dozens of other community groups. Target Hunger programs address two critical needs, immediate food aid and the systemic, underlying causes of poverty that lead to food insecurity. Programs that offer immediate food aid include: Food Pantries, located at both municipal service centers and community/faith-based sites. We also operate a Mobile Pantry to give us greater flexibility and helps us to reach areas where we do not operate out of brick-and-mortar pantries. Most of these pantries are ‘Choice Pantries’ which means that the family can select the food that best meets their dietary needs and cultural preferences. Emergency Food, distributed to anyone in need, primarily people with highly unstable living conditions without access to kitchens. Educational Food Fairs, which distribute thousands of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables at sites in USDA-designated food deserts where residents lack access to fresh produce. Seventy collaborating nonprofits provide, on a rotating basis, additional outreach alongside our team. Home Delivery Programs, which bring food directly to the homes of low-income families, seniors, and people with disabilities who reside in our primary service area and survive on fixed incomes. Summer Youth Breakfast & Lunch Program, provides bi-weekly distribution of nutritious, easy-to-prepare breakfast and lunch food to children during June, July, and August. Disaster Efforts, ready to respond and collaborate with other response efforts in the aftermath of natural and other disasters to provide needed food, water, and other supplies to our community. Community Partner Program, we work with strategically selected organizations to deliver food to their participants or residents.
