About This Cause
Project Purr is a an all-volunteer feral cat and kitten advocacy 501(c)3 non-profit organization which runs a free feral cat and kitten spay/neuter program in Santa Cruz County, California, available to all county residents, regardless of income and no voucher required. By providing an accessible and affordable spay/neuter program for feral cats we humanely decrease the number of cats/kittens surrendered to the shelter... which helps all cats by allowing more adoptable animals to find homes. We also offer impounded feral cats a second chance at life as working mousers through our unique and successful Barn Cat Program. We focus on rescuing feral (unsocial) cats and kittens who are at the greatest risk of being killed in shelters or animal control facilities. In 2010, Project Purr received a PetSmart Charities 2-year grant for $42,500 to spay/neuter 1000 feral cats in target zip codes of south Santa Cruz County. Lynne Achterberg, Project Purr co-founder, received the American Red Cross Santa Cruz County Animal Rescue Hero Award for 2013. In 2012, our spay/neuter program fixed 1266 cats and kittens, which humanely prevented the births of thousands of kittens. In 2009, Project Purr started a new program for our community called "Fix & Feed Pets In Need" which delivers much needed dog and cat food to animals of those in need within Santa Cruz County. We collect and deliver donated pet food to Valley Churches United in Ben Lomond and the Homeless Persons Health Project in Harvey West Park. They have well-established pantries and, by partnering with them, Project Purr easily reaches the animals of those in need. Keeping animals healthy, in their homes, and out of the shelter, saves resources and lives. In 2012, Project Purr collected and delivered over 9,000 pounds of dog and cat food! Project Purr also supplies the pantries with bi-lingual informational flyers about the low cost and free spay/neuter opportunities throughout Santa Cruz County. Project Purr received the Angel Award for the Organization of the Year 2013 for our food donation program at Valley Churches United in Ben Lomond. Donations totalled over $38,000. In early 2014, Project Purr opened a new resale shop called "Rescued Treasures" filled with donations from the community to further our mission and gather much needed funds for our many programs. In the past 4 years, our spay/neuter numbers have tripled. Helping feral cats helps all cats by reducing the number of animals seeking homes. Helping feral cats helps dogs and rabbits, by using shelter resources, such as staff time, space and funds for animals with good outcomes. Helping feral cats helps birds by limiting the number of cats outside and providing food through caregivers. Helping feral cats helps neighborhoods become safer through rabies vaccinations, healthier, and happier with less fighting and mating behaviors each season. Each cat we help, saves the lives of many more. Project Purr volunteers helped children learn about stray/feral and free-roaming cats, overpopulation, and the importance of spay/neuter and compassionate care in the summer of 2014, by partnering with the Santa Cruz SPCA summer camps for kids, and also through other private kids' camps. Helping feral cats teaches our children a kinder and more inclusive way to help all animals.
