Mission Statement

The Brenton Arboretum is a beautiful museum of living trees on 143 acres in Central Iowa. This non-profit organization is open free to the public every day from 9am until sunset. There is something for everyone here to enjoy; stunning vistas, O'Brien Nature Play Area for children, seven hiking paths, and around 40 acres of restored prairie. Public schools may attend FREE field trips through our award winning Knee-High Naturalist program and adults may attend educational classes and events. Drive the entire loop of the road at the Arboretum, learn the common and botanical names of trees and shrubs (all of which are labeled), and look for some of the 186 bird species that have been identified at this location over the years. You'll be so glad you made the drive!

About This Cause

The Brenton Arboretum The Brenton Arboretum, which sits between Adel and Dallas Center on 143 acres, was established by Sue and J.C. Brenton and their children because of their love for trees and desire to preserve an important natural area. The first trees were planted in 1997. The land is part of the original home farm, which was acquired by Dr. James Brenton and his son, William Henry, soon after they arrived from Indiana by covered wagon in 1853. The master plan was created by Anthony Tyznik, the landscape architect for the Morton Arboretum in Chicago. The arboretum includes over 2500 trees and shrubs, representing over 500 species. All trees are labeled with common and botanical names. When you enter the gates, there is a kiosk with information about the Arboretum, event brochures, birding checklists, guides to Leaf and Stormwater Walks, membership applications and more. The Brenton Arboretum Library is located in the Vista Room and visitors may relax in this lovely place from 9am to 4pm while they read and enjoy the view. The setting includes five miles of walking trails, a children’s play center called the O’Brien Nature Play Area, prairies, streams, a small lake with a dock, and a green-roofed Pavilion for picnics. The Vista Room (indoor) and Pavilion (outdoor) are attractive buildings that may be rented by members of the Arboretum for family events or business meetings. Throughout the year, the Arboretum offers a variety of educational classes for children and adults. The Knee-High Naturalist is an award winning field trip program that is offered for free to schools. The program was developed to help kindergarten through second grade students better understand trees and nature and that their understanding would grow into a love of the natural world. The Brenton Arboretum is a non-profit organization, open FREE to the public every day from 9am until sunset, including all holidays. It is located two miles south of Highway 44 and 1 ½ miles west of R Avenue (R16). For more information, visit www.thebrentonarboretum.org.
