Mission Statement
The Mission of the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio is to reduce the impact of poverty by providing furniture to central Ohio families and individuals struggling with severe life challenges.
About This Cause
Furniture Bank of Central Ohio provides furniture to people in need due to poverty or other severe life challenges. Our goal is for all central Ohio families to live in furnished homes, strengthening family units, improving quality of life and building a better community. We pickup of gently used furniture from individuals and organizations. We then offer the donated furniture to families and individuals struggling financially to furnish their own homes. All of the furniture is either donated by central Ohio residents or organizations or built from donated materials by volunteers who adhere to quality methods and standards. It’s a win-win situation for the entire community – families helping families. Social Service Partnerships Families and individuals in need of furniture can schedule an appointment through their case managers. A wide variety of Central Ohio social service agencies refer families to the Furniture Bank to get furniture. Referrals can also come from a church, employer, school or civic organization, etc. The referring agency shares in the cost to serve a family. It costs about $1,300 per family to secure, pick up, store and deliver furniture to each family. The Furniture Bank acts as a centralized hub for Central Ohio social service agencies helping to leverage the generous donations of $5.3m worth of furniture for families in need. Each family or individual is able to select their own furniture with the help and guidance of their case manager and our staff. Furniture is delivered the same day with both curbside and inside deliveries depending on a family’s needs. We work hard to make sure every client gets 94%-95% of the key furniture items they need for their home. We are the second-largest member of the Furniture Bank Association of North America and participate in its leadership team. We serve an average of 3,500 families consisting of nearly 10,000 individuals, including more than 4,000 children. Annually, we pick up and distribute nearly 60,000 pieces of gently used furniture and give each family an average of 13-16 pieces of furniture. We take stewardship of donor dollars seriously as they go directly to program services. In addition, our fee for service and social enterprise income constitutes 30% of our annual cash funding and covers all of our administrative and overhead costs. Self-Sustainability Because the demand for furniture is so great, the Furniture Bank is committed to developing programs that advance its financial self-sustainability. We’re generating a growing portion of our own funding using a business entrepreneurship model. To date, we are doing this with the following programs/services: Agency Referral fees – Cost-sharing with a small percentage of our costs by referring agencies and sponsors Delivery Service fees – Same-day delivery of furniture to client homes (usually 3 to 4 hours) at below-market rates Furniture with a Heart Thrift Store– We are online auctions of donated high valued furniture and furniture not well suited for client homes. All proceeds from the store go directly back into our mission. This self-funding is about 30% of our annual budget, which is sufficient to pay all our administrative and overhead costs. As a result, donor dollars can go directly to help struggling families.
