SOQUE RIVER WATERSHED ASSOCIATION INC

CLARKESVILLE, Georgia, 30523-0032 United States

Mission Statement

To work together with individuals and organizations to protect and restore the Soque River, its tributaries and watershed.

About This Cause

The SRWA (Soque River Watershed Association) was founded in 1998. Its mission statement evolved over time as the Association took roots. The watershed's containment within Habersham County ties the health of the river directly to the history and development of Habersham County. The Soque River and its watershed have a history of usage related to agricultural pursuits such as the raising of corn, chicken, beef; the provision of water to individual households and the county’s municipalities; and power supply to homes and industry. Since the mid-1990s, with the widening of State Route 365, Habersham County has seen tremendous population growth. Challenges facing the watershed still include agriculture, water supply and some industrial concerns but now also include more urban types of issues such as non-point source pollution from housing developments and increasing impervious surfaces resulting from retail development.
