Mission Statement

The Morton Cure Paralysis Fund (MCPF) is committed to finding a cure for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury and other disorders of the central nervous system. MCPF is also a community of people that provides information and emotional support to those affected by paralysis.

About This Cause

On August 27, 1995, Peter Morton, a Senior Vice President at Dain Rauscher, was paralyzed from the neck down in a tragic bicycle accident. Thirty-two years old at the time, Peter was one of the youngest officers in his company as well as an accomplished pilot, musician, and athlete. Now, due to his accident, he has had to lead quite a different life. In 1996, with the strong support of his employer, a group of friends formed the Morton Cure Paralysis Fund (MCPF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to curing paralysis. All proceeds from fund raising activities are donated to not-for-profit organizations involved in research for a cure for paralysis. MCPF succeeds with caring supporters and a disciplined business model: MCPF looks for cutting-edge ideas, enabling researchers to gather the proof-of-concept data needed to pursue multimillion-dollar grants from large financiers. In effect, MCPF helps place new research products in the investigation pipeline. In addition, MCPF maximizes donor contributions by minimizing expenses through volunteerism and in-kind donations. From its humble beginnings in Peter's hometown of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, MCPF has grown into a multistate, Minneapolis-based charity raising over $5.2 million for spinal cord injury research. This success has enabled MCPF to support research at national spinal cord injury (SCI) laboratories as well as Minnesota's well-known research institutions: the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic. We do this, as our slogan says, That all May Walk Again!
