Mission Statement
City Academy transforms children, families and our community through exceptional education and bold expectations that empower children to overcome barriers.
About This Cause
City Academy was co-founded by Don Danforth III and Duncan Marshall in 1999 to be a high-performing independent elementary school for committed families whose educational opportunities were limited by geographic and economic factors. They believed that academic rigor and exceptional teachers would engage students in learning, challenge them to meet or exceed high standards, and prepare graduates for success in top independent secondary schools. A member of the National Association of Independent Schools, City Academy was accredited in 2008 and re-accredited in 2016 by the Independent Schools Association of Central States (ISACS). In 2004, City Academy opened a 40,000 square foot facility to accommodate a growing number of students, and in 2011, the school adopted a specialist teaching model where instructors focus on a single subject to offer a greater depth of understanding to students. In 2019, we completed our Campaign for City Academy, which built our new Early Childhood Education Center and three year old classroom, renovated our STEAM Wing and science labs, funded our endowment, and ultimately increased our capacity to serve up to 250 students as we grow. Today, City Academy serves 215 scholars three years of age through sixth grade from families with economic and geographic barriers to education. Nearly all (90 percent) students come from unaccredited or underperforming public school districts and 50 percent are eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch. Our students come from 40 zip codes throughout the St. Louis region and comprise the following demographics: 86 percent African American, 7 percent Caucasian, and 7 percent biracial; and 48 percent male and 52 percent female.
