Mission Statement

Ohio River Foundation is dedicated to protecting and improving the water quality and ecology of the Ohio River and all waters in its 11-state watershed. ORF works towards these goals through environmental education and conservation activities that serve to inspire environmental stewardship for the benefit and enjoyment of current and future citizens.

About This Cause

EDUCATION PROGRAM Components of the program include: o School programs: River Explorer - An in-river/streambank program in which students grades 4-12 come down to the Ohio River or tributaries for a hands-on learning experience. (4,000 students participate annually and 45,000 student milestone reached in 2019.); Mussels in the Classroom - a new First-in-the- Nation hands-on aquatic husbandry program for in-classroom student engagement. (2,000 students participate annually.). o Produce and participate in events. Cincinnati Coffee Festival, River Cleanups, Earth Day. o Publish River Waves newsletter to disseminate information for membership and general public. o Expand into social networking (i.e., Facebook) and multi-media public relations activities. o Provide internship opportunities for high school, college, and graduate school students. CONSERVATION PROGRAM The ORF conservation program provides critical analysis of policies, procedures, and projects, to influence better land and water management and encourages water conservation activities. The activities of the program are: o Facilitate collaborative efforts to develop a comprehensive Ohio River ecosystem restoration program. o Engage in restoration activities. Assist communities in removing small (lowhead) dams and low-water crossings. Provide Invasive species removal and management services (including volunteer coordination) for public and large private landowners. o Build coalition support for pollution reduction in the Ohio River watershed. o Investigate Clean Water Act violations and compliance issues. o Region's first work-study Youth Conservation Team program, restoring habitat on public lands and training the next generation of environmental stewards.
