Mission Statement

The High Line is a public park on the West Side of Manhattan operated, maintained, and funded by the nonprofit conservancy Friends of the High Line (FHL). Through our work with communities on and off the High Line, FHL is devoted to reimagining public spaces to create connected, healthy neighborhoods and cities through the convergence of possibility, place, people, and experience.

About This Cause

Friends of the High Line was founded in 1999 as a grassroots organization intent on saving a disused industrial railway from demolition. Our history of community-led advocacy continues to inform our vision of equitable and welcoming park access, diversity in hiring and public engagement, sustainable practices that contribute to environmental justice, and partnerships with local shareholders and institutions, especially those representing communities that have been underserved in the past. Owned by the City of New York, the High Line is a public park programmed, maintained, and operated by Friends of the High Line, in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. Upwards of 6 million visitors each year enjoy the singular experience of being on the High Line, surrounded by world-class public art, horticulture, and design. The park is open 365 days a year, free of charge. These are our core programs: • HIGH LINE HORTICULTURE stewards and interprets the renowned gardens that have refreshed and delighted visitors since the park first opened. Their naturalistic planting and process, use of native and resilient plants, and ecological methods in an urban landscape have influenced public and private gardens worldwide. • HIGH LINE ART brings world-class public art to a multidimensional audience. Works encompass sculptural commissions, large-scale billboards and painted murals, live performances, and time-based media, created by artists who represent diversity in geographic, racial, socioeconomic, and national background. • HIGH LINE EDUCATION comprises School Partnerships, bringing multi-session workshops employing a STEAM (STEM + Art) model into local under-resourced schools; Family Workshops, offering drop-in artmaking activities that explore park themes through creative play; and High Line Fellows: Emerging Leaders, a three-year youth development and employment program for local teens. • COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT delivers free public programs for families, older adults, and the general public that include Latin dance nights, Pride and Halloween festivals, tours and conversations, and wellness exercise classes. • The HIGH LINE NETWORK, launched in 2017, is a coalition of 46 infrastructure reuse projects across North America dedicated to creating the next generation of projects transforming disused infrastructure into vibrant public spaces. Supports include peer-to-peer learning, technical assistance, toolkits to promote equitable development, policy labs, and biennial symposia.
