Mission Statement

The Chinatown Community Young Lions Inc. was established in 1972 as a cultural program to teach youths of various ethnicities and backgrounds about Chinese culture, performing arts (Lion Dance), and sports. This enabled youths between the ages of 9 to 21, the chance to participate, learn, and diversify themselves in something that was unavailable to them at the time. We found that many youths were skeptical to join the older, more established associations in fear of unwanted obligations set upon them, so we created an open door concept. Over the past 40 years, CCYL has established itself as a one-of-a-kind organization performing at various special events throughout New York and Tri-State areas. With the funding solely created by our performing arts program, we were then able to create the Chinatown Community Youths programs, which included, sports activities, counseling services, field trips, arts and crafts, music appreciation, job placement, community service, and most recently financial awareness.

About This Cause

Today, our program consists of over 250 active volunteers. Within the 40 years of existence our program has had over 3,000 youth volunteers. I would also like to mention that CCYL has been regarded as one of the most honored groups in our community, commended by the “CETA” program administration for our Summer Work programs and most recently by Hamilton Madison House for our volunteer work during Hurricane Sandy. Neither program has ever been sponsored by New York City, State, or Government aid. There are no fees or membership dues for any of our programs. Our staff of volunteers is made up of college students, parents, and local activists who donate their time to help run and supervise our programs. None of our staff or directors is salaried. We are currently seeking funding for our cultural arts/history programs. The central purpose of the program is to teach cultural arts and history. There is a strong need for this program due to the lack of knowledge our communities youth have with its arts and culture as well as the history behind such. We want to foster multiculturalism by teaching various ethnic backgrounds, both male and female, about Asian arts and history. We would like to focus our efforts to bridge communities in the Chinatown and Two Bridges area in the lower Manhattan. We estimate that we can reach over 1,600 individuals or over 350 families, which are primarily low-income families. The events will center on the Lunar New Years parade(s) showcasing what our programs have been teaching by having youths between the ages of 9-21 years old perform in public the art of lion dancing. They will incorporate ceremonial dances and historical blessing and bring forth good fortune to those around. All events are outdoors and vary in time and length. The events span over a week, with one parade usually lasting about 7-8 hours. Throughout the year, our Asian cultural and history program takes place indoors at a local school, in which we rent out space to educate and provide our members a safe and conducive environment. All of our program directors are over the age of 21 and work one-on-one with each youth explaining the movements and steps needed as well as the historical meaning behind each movement. This is a very active and physically demanding art so we try and teach health and self-awareness as well. Throughout the year we donate our services to other agencies that might need our support. Most notably hospitals, nursing homes, schools, day care centers, and head start programs.
