Mission Statement
The McComb City Railroad Depot Museum will preserve the railroad history of Southwest Mississippi through artifacts and exhibits, and will promote economic development through heritage tourism designed to educate the public of the area's rich past as a transportation hub.
About This Cause
Our railroad museum has been open since 2003. It is housed in the McComb Depot built in 1901. The depot is still an active train station. We have almost 2000 artifacts which tell the rich railroad history of the McComb and Pike County. The museum is completely run by volunteers except for our museum hostess. Our 501-C organization is governed by 11 board members who rotate on a 3 year basis. We have an outside train exhibit which includes one of only two remaining Illinois Central mountain type steam locomotives, the only refrigerator car the IC ever made, (refrigerator car was built in McComb) an 1883 office car, a rare 1914 Railway Post Office Car, an IC caboose, and a wrecking derrick. The outside exhibit has a canopy built over it to protect it from the elements. Special projects include: Scout Day, Train Day, Annual Meeting, Kids' Day at the Museum, and Christmas by the Tracks. Our Christmas project includes inviting local schools to visit our model train display as well as to visit our outside train exhibit. Most of the children we serve are below the poverty level. We are open 6 days a week Monday through Saturday from Noon to 4 pm. Presently our retired railroad men are completely restoring the 1883 office car and the caboose. Upon their completion, the 1914 railway post office car will be repainted as well as the wrecking derrick. If it were not for volunteers, our museum would not exist. Our funding comes from a drive called Friends of the Museum and through a Canadian National Railroad Program called CN Railroaders in the Community in which CN gives the museum money for each retired railroad employee who volunteers 40 hours each year to our museum. We also have a small museum store. Our next big project is to raise the funds to light and protect our outside train exhibit. The retired railroad men have worked so hard to renovate the cars and we feel obligated to preserve their work.
