Mission Statement
Breakthrough is a global human rights organization driving the culture change we need to build a world in which all people live with dignity, equality, and respect. We do this using a potent mix of media, arts, and tech with an intersectional feminist approach to resisting oppressive power structures.
About This Cause
Founded in 1999, Breakthrough is a global human rights organization based in the U.S. and India, with the purpose of using pop culture to power culture change—to reach people where they are, to inspire individual and collective action, and to replace harmful norms with the human rights values of dignity, equality, and respect. We have a long history of successful and critically-acclaimed creative endeavors. Our cutting-edge campaigns, narrative films, gaming, and more, equip people to take action to change hearts and minds, and to catalyze lasting culture change. We harness the power of partner-led storytelling to spark new narratives. One powerful example is our successful global Breakthrough campaign, Bell Bajao! (“Ring the Bell”), which ran from 2008 to 2013, pushing bystanders to take action on violence against women. With programs challenging early marriage, gender-biased sex selection and discrimination, sexual harassment and assault, and domestic violence in India as well as expanding to race, immigration, LGBTQ, and more in the U.S., our work enables change makers to act in their own spheres and beyond. In the US, Breakthrough seeks to catalyze people to think beyond the norms we are socialized to adhere to and to create communities (and ways of being) that move beyond all that challenges, limits and endangers people in marginalized communities. Recognizing violence in all its forms - sexual, economic, political, personal; we take on issues of gender, race, sexual identity, class and citizenship to create cultural narratives through which people can build safer and more just lives.
