Mission Statement
Mission Statement Gladden Community House is a settlement house serving Franklinton and its surrounding neighborhoods. We are a United Way of Central Ohio affiliated non-profit agency providing education and support for individuals, families and groups. We Do This: • To preserve and strengthen the well being of the community and its members. • To help and inspire community members to resolve their problems and control and shape their lives.
About This Cause
Gladden Community House, founded in 1905, is a “settlement house” or neighborhood-based multi-service agency serving the Franklinton and near west side communities of Columbus, Ohio. Franklinton is a very low-income neighborhood with a median household income of under $22,000. About one-third of Franklinton families have incomes below the poverty level. Franklinton residents also tend to have very low education levels —over half of Franklinton adults do not have high school degrees or a GED. Gladden also serves parts of the low-income Hilltop and Southwest communities for a total service population of 36,500. As the primary community center for the near west side, Gladden maintains a balance of services to meet the most pressing needs in our community, with about half our annual budget devoted to Adult and Family programs and half to Youth programs. Our Adult Program primarily focuses on the emergency needs of individuals and families. Our Youth programs focus on our children’s educational, recreational, and nutritional needs. We publish a monthly community newspaper, The Franklinton News to keep residents informed about activities, events, and resources in our neighborhood. We also invest time and energy in community organizing and neighborhood development efforts to build up community strengths and resources.
