About This Cause

Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus (BGCC) has been providing afterschool and summer programming to underserved youth in Columbus since 1948. BGCC was founded to give boys from the Franklinton and Hilltop communities a safe alternative to hanging out on the streets. The motto of the Westside Boys Club, as it was originally called, was "it beats the streets!” In 1955, the Milo-Grogan Boys Club opened on Cleveland Avenue to serve youth from that neighborhood. Although both Clubs allowed girls to join as members as early as the 1970's, the organization (along with all other Clubs throughout the United States) did not officially change its name to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus until 1990. In 2010, BGCC entered into a partnership with KIPP: Columbus to serve an additional 200 kids per day at the KIPP-Connect Boys & Girls Club. BGCC's offers programs to KIPP students within their own building from the time school lets out to 8pm. After the Ohio Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs received a substantial grant from the state in 2013, BGCC was able to open two more permanent sites. The R.I.S.E. Boys & Girls Club caters to teens of the Weinland Park neighborhood, while the South Side Club serves youth on the South Side of Columbus. In 2014, BGCC was approached by Homeport Ohio to facilitate a summer program in the Pheasant Run subsidized housing project in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. After a successful summer spent in Pheasant Run, Homeport Ohio, Ohio Capital Housing Corporation, and BGCC came together to ensure programming was available for the Club members of Pheasant Run into the school year. Also, in 2014, BGCC began to explore social entrepreneurship by opening its first “fee-for-service” Club in Upper Arlington, when students ages 6-18 can spends their after-school and summer hours in engaging, fun and supervised programs. Today, BGCC has seven sites and serves over 5,500 youth from over 43 zip codes throughout Columbus. An affiliate of Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), which serves more than 4 million youth annually throughout the United States, Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus’ mission is to empower the young people who need us most to realize their potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. Our Positive Youth Development Program focuses on three program pillars: 1) Academic Success, 2) Good Character & Citizenship and 3) Healthy Lifestyles and are available to youth ages 6-18. Our programs are open Monday through Friday from 3pm to 8pm during the school year and from 10am to 5pm during the summer.
