Minds Matter NYC connects driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college, create their future, and change the world
About This Cause
A seven-year program beginning in tenth grade, Minds Matter NYC offers students a comprehensive and sustained slate of services, including academic enrichment, college preparedness, personal development, social-emotional learning, and career exposure and readiness. Mentoring is at the heart of Minds Matter NYC’s vision for change. Every student in the program is paired with two volunteer mentors who support, challenge, and celebrate their mentee throughout the full three years in the high school program. In addition, every student in high schools is supported by their Team Leader, their Program Directors, their writing and math tutors, and their college advisors. In total, 9 volunteers surround every student, a dedicated community determined to help their student succeed. When student transition to college, they are placed into a small, supportive cohort of other Minds Matter NYC students (determined by college type and location) and are assigned a College Coach. Coaches are volunteers who manage a caseload of eight students, meeting with them regularly and helping facilitate Minds Matter NYC’s academic and career readiness college workshops. This massive investment of time and attention is the key reason as to why 100% of Minds Matter NYC students—since 1991—have been accepted into 4-year colleges and more than 80% attend top-tier schools and universities
