Mission Statement
The Temple Beth Israel Preservation Society is a nonprofit, multicultural center committed to preserving the unique Jewish heritage of Northeastern Connecticut.
About This Cause
The Preservation Society is housed in a beautiful, historic building (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) that was constructed to serve as a place of worship and built primarily by Jewish survivors of the Holocaust and resistance fighters who settled on farms in the surrounding communities, along with local Jewish business people. The goal of the Society is to continue to serve as a Jewish house of worship welcoming all who seek to observe and celebrate Jewish rituals and traditions while honoring the founders of the community and, in particular, that generation of immigrant Jewish farmers who spoke Yiddish, educated their children and celebrated new American lives in this synagogue. The Society's programing is designed to draw attention to the partnership between the Temple and the Christian community that welcomed its members and supported its construction. A key element of the programing is to identify and celebrate shared values among different faiths and cultures. Key events are interfaith Thanksgiving observances, an interfaith community Passover Seder and Jewish High Holiday services that are open to the community at large. Another important element of the Society's programming is an educational outreach to local elementary and high schools designed to teach the lessons of the Holocaust through testimony by survivors and children of survivors. The Society enhances local cultural, educational and social life by serving as an interfaith resource for the community through close relationships with local churches, schools and civic organizations.
