Mission Statement
The San Diego Mesa College Foundation supports student success - through scholarships, providing food cards to those without sustainable food source, emergency assistance for student veterans, and supporting programs across the college.
About This Cause
San Diego Mesa College is the largest of the 3 community colleges in the San Diego District. Between 22,000 and 25,000 students attend each semester. It is both an Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Agricultural HSI; and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander institution. If there were such a designation, it would also be a Veteran Serving Institution, as nearly 15% of its students are current or former military students. Rigorous academic programs, student support, and caring faculty and staff are part of the many measures that increase student success on the Mesa campus. It is a statewide leader in transferring students to the UC and CSU system. It was recently chosen as 1 of 16 community colleges in the state to be able to offer a Bachelor's degree - this fall, the first freshman class in Health Information Technology begin. The Mesa Foundation supports the faculty and staff at Mesa College. When a need is identified, the foundation tries to fill it. Learning that a financial emergency can cause veteran students to drop out of college, and emergency assistance fund was established to keep veterans in college. The foundation recently learned that many Former Foster Youth do not have a sustainable source of food, and began providing food cards to the cafeteria. We've learned when students remain on campus to eat, they are more likely to take advantage of tutoring, and working with faculty. The Foundation also provides equipment, faculty and staff development, and other opportunities for specific programs at Mesa. Scholarships are always needed, and students continually reinforce that it isn't just the financial assistance that means to much, it is knowing that someone cares that gets them through the tough times. Mesa students are a good investment, and the donations the foundation receives change lives!
