SAN DIEGO CHINESE HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND MUSEUM

San Diego, California, 92101 United States

Mission Statement

The mission of the San Diego Chinese Historical Society and Museum (SDCHM) is to educate and inspire by preserving and celebrating the richness of Chinese art, history, and culture, highlighting the contributions of Chinese Americans to the region and across the Californias. Our institution developed from the efforts of San Diego’s Chinese immigrant community to share its own history, starting in 1986, with the incorporation of the Chinese Historical Society of Greater San Diego and Baja California. The museum represents the Chinese immigrant community, and, through the Asian Pacific Historic District, Asian and Pacific Islanders of the County. It further supports cultural tourism as one of the region's vibrant arts and culture organizations.

About This Cause

Incorporated in 1986 as the Chinese Historical Society of Greater San Diego and Baja California, and opening its doors to the public as a museum on Third Avenue in 1996, the San Diego Chinese Historical Society and Museum (SDCHM) is one of America’s foremost institutions dedicated to sharing the Chinese American experience, and to promoting Chinese art and culture. We help people of all ages and backgrounds understand the different histories, cultures, and perspectives of our multicultural society through exhibitions, family activities, and other forms of educational programming. Our original exhibitions share both the history of San Diego’s Chinatown and highlight aspects of the broader heritage from which it sprung. Our twice-monthly lecture series (with the San Diego State University Chinese Cultural Center) explores diverse aspects of the Chinese American experience. We provide arts-based programming for families, featuring creative activities, like storytelling and brush painting. For youth, we have partnered with local universities and high schools to provide internship opportunities, such as with our Chinese American Oral History Program. For children, we provide Classroom Exhibit Presentations, which illustrate aspects of Chinese and Chinese-American history, art, and culture through lessons that adhere to Common Core standards. Please check out our website, for information about online programming. While our sites in downtown San Diego have been closed to the public due to the global pandemic, we have continued to provide programming for the community through our lecture series, as well as online programs for schools and community groups. We look forward to reopening our sites in the near future, and will provide updates via our website as they are available.
