Mission Statement

For 37 years, The Eli Home's mission has been to shelter, comfort, heal, encourage and strengthen victims of child abuse and family violence, and to prepare them to reenter the community to lead stable, non-violent lives, free from fear and intimidation—to break the cycle of abuse and family violence.

About This Cause

The Eli Home provides shelter and programs for abused and neglected children and their mothers in a secure home setting. Programs aim to remove legal, financial, and emotional obstacles to moms' securing and keeping stable housing for their family. Eli's residential recovery program supports addicted mothers in their recovery WITH their children, lessening the trauma that the children have already experienced. The Need: When child abuse goes untreated, documented consequences include low self-esteem, running away, academic failure, suicide, criminal behavior, promiscuity, eating disorders and substance abuse. These levy a heavy toll on society and perpetuate further abuse. With almost 52,000 reports of child abuse per year in Orange County, the number of children and mothers who need shelter is far greater than the spaces available. In 2016 the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) shifted support away from transitional shelters, causing a significant loss of funding for The Eli Home and other transitional shelters. More than ever shelters must look to private funders to help us fill this gap. Victims of family violence rely on The Eli Home for safety, healing, and help to achieve and maintain safe, independent living. Additionally, in the past two years we have seen a significant increase in mothers who have substance abuse issues. Recovering mothers have specialized needs; our residential recovery program addresses those needs and keeps children with their moms as both work to build strong relationships and remove barriers to obtaining independent drug and violence free living placements. Services Provided: Staff trains family members to recognize and avoid potentially abusive situations and to trust and cooperate with each other in that effort. Moms and children receive individual and family counseling supervised by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Moms receive parent education through classes and parent-child interaction time. Moms continue sobriety classes through our collaborative partner Twin Town Treatment Centers, which has provided evidence based treatment for addiction for 25 years. They learn to recognize and cope with stressors that impact their sobriety. Specifically, for the moms, The Eli Home provides • Case management • Sobriety classes and transportation to Celebrating Sobriety meetings • Life-skills training, including financial literacy • Anger management training • Assistance with transportation, food and household supplies • Job skills training and employment seeking assistance • Help in securing affordable housing Children also take classes on the following subjects: • Body rights (child abuse prevention) • Anger management • Social skills training Our training and support make moms vital allies in protecting their children from future abuse. They become job-ready and secure affordable housing so they and their children can live independently, safely and confidently as they maintain their sobriety Families stay in our shelter for an average of six months. Before graduating from our program, we assist them in locating their next step in securing permanent housing. Case management, counseling and classes are available to clients for 6 months after they exit. These aftercare services focus on helping clients maintain their budget, employment, and a sober, safe environment for their families. Our short-term goal is to provide families emotional support, safety and stability. Our long-term goals are improved parenting and family relationships, stable housing, financial independence and self-sufficiency. Our overarching goal is for moms and children alike to gain confidence, communicate more effectively, and live independent, drug-free, productive, violence-free lives. The Eli Home has ranked in the top five out of 35 Orange County transitional shelter programs. Since our inception, over 40,537 children and families have been served in all of Eli’s programs. ELI’S HEART Alex Jaso, current Eli Home Board member, came to Eli in 1997, when he was only 9 years old. Withdrawn and frightened, he came with his older sister and mother from a background of physical and mental abuse. He remembers living in garages and sleeping on the cement floor with cockroaches and rodents. After their stay at the shelter, he and his sister, Naya, both say their new lives truly began and for the first time they felt safe. At Alex’s graduation with a master’s degree from Stanford School of Business last year (2019), Alex said, “The Eli Home saved my life and changed its trajectory. I would never be here without them.”
