Mission Statement
Working in partnership with the City of San Diego, the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation preserves and protects the natural environment of Mission Trails Regional Park and provides and promotes educational and recreational opportunities.
About This Cause
Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP) encompasses 7,220 acres of both natural and developed recreational areas, and its rugged hills, valleys, and open areas represent a San Diego prior to the landing of Cabrillo in San Diego Bay in 1542. Today, Mission Trails offers San Diego County residents and visitors a way to explore the cultural, historical, and recreational aspects of our region with 65 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, as well as fishing, camping, rock climbing, and equestrian trails that weave together mountains, valleys and lakes. Started in 1974, Mission Trails Regional Park has become one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Originally used by the Kumeyaay, the park is the site of the Old Mission Dam, built to store water for the Mission San Diego de Alcala. The MTRP Foundation was established in 1988 and funded the construction of MTRP’s 14,000-square-foot Visitor and Interpretive Center. The Foundation helps to maintain the building, and develops interpretive exhibits for visitors to learn about the habitats found within MTRP. The exhibits highlight the geology, plants, and animals found in San Diego County as well as the Kumeyaay, early inhabitants of our region. In addition, the MTRP Foundation develops and provides educational programming for K-8 students, youth groups, and adult learners, and raises funds for projects such as trail development and maintenance, wildlife protection, and habitat restoration.
