Mission Statement
Since 1983, The Wooden Floor has touched the lives of over 80,000 young people. From our Santa Ana campus, The Wooden Floor annually gives 375 under-served local youth the tools to live fuller, healthier lives through a unique approach grounded in dance. We make a long-term investment in each of these young people. They engage in intensive dance education supported by academic and family services that change the way they make decisions, helping them to discover and pursue their full potential. We are proud that since 2005, 100 percent of our seniors have graduated from high school on time and have gone on to pursue higher education—a rate about twice the national average for their socio-economic peers.
About This Cause
The Wooden Floor (TWF) programmatic model has grown over 30 years based on evolving client need, organization experience, client and community input, research into best practices, a culture of continuous learning and data-driven decision making. What we learned has led to our pioneering, holistic blend of programs with dance at the center, supported by intensive academic and family programs. TWF’s comprehensive blend of year-round programs begins with the Dance Education Program as our core element for transformational growth. In the dance studio, students develop self-knowledge, which evolves into self-assurance, leadership, cooperative learning, positive decision-making and joy. Rehearsal and performance – such as our Annual Concert – teach discipline, goal-setting, commitment and achievement through hard work. Our students learn to put forth their best effort and strive for excellence in all they do – in the studio, on stage, in the classroom, and in life. To bridge education and college access challenges, the dance education program is supported by Academic, College and Career Readiness Programs to ensure that our students have fundamental academic and life skills needed to succeed. The goals of these programs are to provide early, consistent academic intervention to ensure on-time high school graduation & college-readiness; remove barriers to college access, including programs that prepare parents/guardians to support their student’s path through college financially and emotionally; prepare first-generation students - academically, socially and financially - for successful transition into college; and, support persistence in college through continued mentoring and resources through The Next Step© website portal and merit-based college scholarships. To address the hardships low-income families face, our Family Services take a case management approach to counseling, crisis intervention and referral to additional social services to resolve issues that affect the well-being of our students and their families. Counseling addresses root causes of student behavior problems that affect academic performance. Sequential parent workshops over 10 years strengthen families by improving relationships and fostering economic self-sufficiency through training in communication, parenting, goal-setting, college financing, health, and financial literacy. These core programs comprise our creative youth development model and copyrighted Theory of Change.
