Mission Statement

The mission of the Riverside University Health System (RUHS) Foundation is to foster friends and inspire philanthropic support for the priority needs of Riverside University Health System. RUHS Foundation was established in 1989 as a nonprofit philanthropic organization. The Foundation is governed by a 22 member Board of Directors, alongside an Executive Director, Senior Director of Development and support team. For nearly three decades the Foundation has collaborated successfully with donors and stakeholders to support RUHS Medical Center’s role as a public teaching hospital and safety net provider. RUHS Foundation recently expanded its philanthropic support to the RUHS Behavioral Health and Public Health agencies and the system’s 10 community-based health clinics. By embracing all our RUHS partners, we are better poised to achieve the RUHS mission of improving the health of Riverside County residents and bringing quality, clinically integrated health services to our communities.

About This Cause

About Riverside University Health System Riverside University Health System (RUHS) has been a bedrock of quality healthcare and medical education since the Board of Supervisors established Riverside County’s first public hospital in 1893. Back then, the “Old General” hospital was located in a converted hotel in downtown Riverside with just a handful of employees and 47 admissions during its first year of business. Today, “Old General” has flourished into a quality integrated health and behavioral health system (RUHS) that serves hundreds of thousands of residents each year and employs more than 6,000 highly trained professionals and support staff countywide. With a local economic impact of more than $1.6 billion, the system includes the 439-bed Moreno Valley-based Medical Center and Trauma Center, dozens of hospital-based clinics and 10 community-based clinics, the Behavioral Health and Public Health agencies. Last year, RUHS delivered nearly a half-million inpatient, outpatient, and emergency/trauma visits, while RUHS Public Health deployed population initiatives to serve and safeguard the county’s 2.35 million residents spanning more than 7,000 square miles. Of the hospitals in Riverside County, RUHS Medical Center’s operates one of the busiest emergency departments and serves as the county's safety-net Level 2 trauma center. Last year, the Medical Center saw 86,000 emergency department arrivals and more than 2,500 acute-trauma patients were seen. In addition, the Medical Center’s hospital and community based clinics provided 350,000 outpatient visits. As the primary medical teaching institution and pipeline for Riverside County’s healthcare workforce, RUHS trains thousands of doctors, clinical pharmacists, nurses, as well as allied health, behavioral health, and public health professionals annually through residency programs it sponsors and oversees, and through affiliations with institutions like California Baptist University, Loma Linda University Health, University of California Riverside and Western Science University. RUHS enjoys strong partnerships with local community colleges and high schools to ensure workforce opportunities are available for students at all levels of educational experience. RUHS is vital to the stability of our region’s healthcare infrastructure. Like safety net systems across the nation, RUHS operates in a volatile and rapidly changing landscape of shrinking reimbursements and growing demand for quality, cost-efficient services. RUHS is answering this demand through innovation and by joining with other like-minded Inland Southern California organizations to expand access to services and to deploy evidence-based population health initiatives through a shared, electronic health record. As the safety-net for Riverside County, almost seven of every 10 RUHS patients rely on Medi-Cal or Managed Medi-Cal for health insurance coverage, the vast majority representing Inland Empire Health Plan's 1.2 million covered residents. They comprise much of the Inland Empire's low-income working class (families of four earning less than $33,534 and single adults earning no more than $16,395 annually). RUHS Foundation is proud to support RUHS and its mission to serve Riverside County's residents. While the RUHS Foundation has provided a wide array of support for programs, equipment, and education, the Foundation is currently championing efforts in pediatrics, including abuse, neglect, and trafficking; women's health; and the hospital's cardiac program.
